Carian Palaces

This presentation will provide an overview of the settlement structure in Caria, with a special emphasis on the palace as a characteristic building type (with both residential and audience facilities) and as indicative of a centralised power. Furthermore, relations to Achaemenid palace architecture and planning will be discussed.

A settlement survey has already been conducted from a philological/historical point of perspective in connection with the Copenhagen Polis Centre's inventory of Greek Poleis (Hansen & Nielsen 2004). The general premise for the CPC inventory is the definition of the Greek poleis as a particular phenomenon, which may be definable according to a set of guidelines.

In connection with a larger work on Hekatomnid Caria and its navigating between the Persian Achaemenid Empire on the one hand and the Greek world on the other, I have analysed in all 48 settlements in Caria focusing on a number of archaeological features that may produce an alternative picture. However, it soon became clear that it remains a major obstacle to use the available archaeological data as distinctions between different political structures and interdependencies. The material is simply too heterogenous to say anything with any certainty.

Therefore I set out to explore a single building type in its various contexts. The palace seems quite suited for this purpose not least since the palatial functions of the building may be of relevance for a general consideration of the political situation.
