This field of research is based on the notion of "gesture", defined as an operation involving the human body with a precise purpose, and which is often the subject of apprenticeship. Exploiting archaeological, archaeometric, iconographic and textual data, archaeologists, historians and literary scholars working in this field aim to identify the social, cultural and symbolic dynamics at work in technical and ritual practices.

The restitution of technical gestures refers to the process implemented in an operative chain (Chaîne opératoire), from the acquisition of a raw material and its preparation, to the manufacture of an object or a monument, to its use and beyond, its abandonment, its recycling, etc. Experimental archaeology is a complementary resource field for addressing these issues. Ritual gestures are also considered from the perspective of the study of the representation of an individual or a social group, as they contribute to maintaining memory and defining identity as well as socio-cultural norms. Gestures are also studied in the social, political and economic interactions between people, in their verbal and non-verbal communication in everyday life. The symbolic, religious and aesthetic dimensions of objects are important parameters of the research carried out within the axis. The studies cover the long term, from the earliest protohistory, the Neolithic, to the contemporary period.
