Bronze coin of Apamea (133-48 BC)

The study of Apamean coins has a long history. It was started in XVIII century together with other ancient Greek and Roman coins by famous numismatists such as I. Eckhel, D. Sestini and others. In XIX century when active research and description of ancient cities of Phrygia was started by different travelers and scientist it became much more intensive. But the main feature of these studies was using the coins as an illustration of different myths and legends connected with a history of the city. G. Hirschfeld, D.G. Hogarth, W.M. Ramsay and other scientists who explored the Apamean history used coins as a source of myth about Marsyas, arc of Noe and evidence of location of rivers which sprang from vicinity of Apamea.

The great progress in the study of Apamean coins was made by the Keeper of the Greek coins in the British Museum B.V. Head. He published a collection of these coins from the Museum and created its chronology and typology. Unfortunately there are no new great investigations in this matter since this time although there are a lot of important articles about different problems coinage and monetary circulation of Apamea. All publishers of new specimens of these coins are using Head’s scheme. But the research of phrygian coins in general now is developing and we have a very good opportunity to continue it.

Archeological survey with the bounds of the “Kelainai–Apameia Kibotos Project” provides us such opportunity. During the numismatic study of coins from Apamea and its vicinity we have a deal with two groups of coins. One group of coins receives from the survey team which is working on the Apamea hill. They have exact indication on the place of discovery (according to grid of squares covering the hill).  Second group is coins brought by local peoples from different parts of the city and its vicinity. In most cases we don’t know a provenance of these findings. And of course in further work this fact must be taken into account.

The main aim of the numismatic study in survey of Kelainai–Apameia is a reconstruction of monetary circulation in the city. It can provide us invaluable information about an economical life, commodity-money relations; commercial and cultural links and illuminate not clear aspects of history of the city.

On the other hand the research of numismatic materials from Kelainai–Apameia can give new facts for the history of coinage of the city and for more detail work in the field of chronology and typology of Apamean coins.

Perspective field of study is an exploring of foreign coins which were taking part in monetary circulation of the city. There are a lot of findings of Lydian, Persian, seleucid and other Hellenistic coins which can provide us additional information about the history of Kelainai–Apamea.

The work in this direction now is coming true in such way. All coins are registering, describing and including in special database. Also this information is supplemented by photos of the coins. As a result of this work is planning special publications of numismatic materials from the survey of Kelainai–Apameia and collections of different museums.
