| UMR Ausonius provides researchers with two workspaces specially for the processing, preventive conservation and study of artefacts and ecofacts. This service provides direct support for research and also plays an important part in training undergraduates and postgraduates by hosting practical sessions, scientific activities (post-excavation) and training courses every year. |

The Archaeological Material Laboratory (room 104 – Archéopôle d’Aquitaine)
It comprises several specialized workstations:

- Washing/screening station:
washing and settling tank, drying rack, ultrasonic cleaners

- Photo station:
stand with lighting, camera and macro lenses, light table
|
|
|
- Macroscopic analysis:
Leica EZ4 HD stereomicroscope with interactive measurement software and Leica Wild M3Z stereomicroscope

- 3D survey station for 3D capture (Artec Space Spider scanner) and data materialization (Raise3D N2 Dual plus printer)
|

- Computer workstation for recording archaeological information, computer-aided design (CAD)

- Offices assigned to researchers and students

| These workstations can be reserved by e-mail for specialized studies or for postgraduate work. |

| The lab also provides all the bits and bobs for processing and analysis with this archaeological equipment. These may also be reserved or borrowed. |

The lab also hosts two reference collections for use in research and student training:
- a fishbone reference collection made up of skeletons of extant species. This constantly growing collection counts 171 specimens for 84 different species. It is currently the largest salt-water fish reference collection in Nouvelle Aquitaine for specimens from the Atlantic coast and, to a lesser extent, the Mediterranean. This bone library can be consulted in agreement with Brice Ephrem, the owner of the collection. Applications should be made by e-mail to the Archaeological Material Service;
- a reference collection of ceramic production of Aquitaine for the protohistorical, ancient and medieval periods.

Archaeological Material Annex (room 201)
The annex is on the ground floor of the Archéopôle (room 201) and has room for storage and work. It comprises:
- an area for storing and conserving archaeological material (11 m shelving);
- a work table for processing material;
- electrical connections and Internet connection.

The laboratory is run by Marielle Bernier, ceramologist, whose duties include:
- processing, preventive conservation and recording of archaeological material from protohistorical, ancient and medieval times;
- preliminary study of all archaeological material to facilitate specialist work (sorting, classifying, identifying);
- the study of ancient ceramics;
- graphical representation (by hand and CAD) of objects and ground surveys;
- sampling, processing and recording of material from scheduled excavations and management of records concerning material (graphic and photographic documentation);
- management of collections.
She also runs annual training sessions from January onwards for researchers and final year students and postgraduates:
-Processing and preventive conservation of all archaeological material.
-Archaeological data recording techniques.
-Technical drawing and computer-aided design (CAD) of all archaeological material.
